What Is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup (also called cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation) uses a specialized device to deposit pigment into the upper layers of the skin. Unlike traditional body tattoos that go deep into the dermis, permanent makeup sits closer to the surface — which is why results fade over time and require touch-ups, typically every 1–3 years depending on the technique and your skin type.

It's not truly permanent, but it lasts far longer than anything you're applying each morning.

Permanent Brows: Microblading vs. Powder Brows vs. Combo

Brows are the most popular permanent makeup service — and also the one with the most technique options. The right choice depends on your skin type, natural brow hair, and the look you're going for.

Microblading

Microblading uses a hand tool with fine needles to create hair-like strokes in the skin. The result looks incredibly natural, almost like real brow hairs were added. Best for clients with normal-to-dry skin and some natural brow hair to work with. Not ideal for oily skin — oil causes the strokes to blur over time, losing that crisp, defined look.

Powder Brows (Ombre Brows)

Powder brows use a machine to build soft, pixelated color across the brow, similar to how a brow powder looks applied with a brush. The front of the brow is lighter, the tail is darker. This technique works on all skin types, including oily, and tends to hold longer than microblading.

Combination Brows

Combination brows blend both — hair strokes at the front for a natural-looking start, powder fill through the body and tail for density and definition. This is what most clients end up choosing because it gives the best of both techniques.

Important: All brow services require a touch-up appointment 6–8 weeks after the initial session. Skin heals differently for everyone, and the touch-up is where your artist corrects any areas that faded unevenly and refines the shape.

Permanent Eyeliner

Permanent eyeliner adds definition to your lash line without the smudging, fading, or daily application. Options range from a thin, precise line that simply defines the lash line to a more visible liner look with variable thickness.

Lash enhancement liner deposits pigment directly between the lashes to make them look fuller and darker at the root — not a visible "line" so much as depth. It's the most natural option and looks good on everyone.

Classic liner creates a defined line along the upper lid, lower lid, or both. Thickness and style are customized to your eye shape.

Healing takes about 2 weeks. During that time, the color looks darker than the final result — this is normal. Once the skin heals and sheds the outer layer, the pigment softens to its true color.

Permanent Lip Color

Permanent lip color can be done a few ways. A lip blush adds a soft, diffused wash of color across the lips — like a tinted balm effect that enhances your natural lip color and adds subtle definition. A full lip color gives more pigment saturation, closer to a lipstick look.

Both techniques also help define the lip line, which is particularly valuable for clients whose lip border has faded or become uneven over time.

Lips tend to require more touch-ups than brows because the skin on and around the lips turns over faster. Expect a refresh every 1–2 years.

Who Is Permanent Makeup Right For?

Permanent makeup works well for clients who:

It's not the right fit for clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, on certain medications (like blood thinners or Accutane), or prone to keloid scarring. A consultation before booking gives your artist the chance to screen for contraindications.

What to Expect at Your Atlanta Appointment

A permanent makeup appointment starts with a shape consultation before any pigment touches your skin. Your artist will map the brow shape, liner placement, or lip outline using removable pencil, and you'll approve the design before anything begins.

Numbing cream is applied and allowed to sit for 20–30 minutes, so discomfort during the procedure is minimal for most clients. The actual tattooing takes 1–2 hours depending on the service.

Aftercare is simple: keep the area dry for the first week, avoid picking at any flaking, and skip active exfoliants (retinol, acids) near the treated area while healing.
